Uganda tasked to set up a cyber-security response team at the national level
The workshop, in partnership with the Africa Center of Excellence of Obofemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, attracted sixteen universities across the country.
The government of Uganda has been tasked to set up a cyber-security response team at the national level. This team should aim at creating awareness and building human resource capacity in cyber security.
This advice was given during the five-day intensive modular training workshop on cyber security held at Islamic University in Uganda Kampala (IUIU).
The workshop, in partnership with the Africa Center of Excellence of Obofemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, attracted sixteen universities across the country.
Dr Jamiru Sserwanga, the vice-rector in charge of academics at IUIU, said the training emphasised cyber security systems for the entire digital world through information technology and computer science advancement changes.
The head of computer science and ICT at IUIU, Dr Umar Yahaya, asked the government to build capacity through training human resources in cyber security at the national level. This, he said, is aimed at producing trainees and practitioners in the field.
“The workshop targets persons who routinely handle ICT tasks such as Security, Network, Database, and System administration, as well as academic researchers in the area of cyber security,” he highlighted.
Meanwhile, Prof Sola Aderounmu from Obafemi Awolowoo University Nigeria highlighted some of the benefits of training and getting precautions on how to utilize the cyber security system.
“At ACE, cyber security is one of our strength areas. We have built capacity in various areas including the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Intelligent Systems, among others.
“This explains why we have earned the trust and confidence of the World Bank which has so far provided considerable funding to the ACE.
“I look forward to growing our partnership to broader levels, such that we can also welcome some of IUIU’s students and staff to our ACE, to accomplish their research projects there”, said Prof. Aderounmu.
A memorandum of understanding is yet to be signed to guide the institutions in future collaboration.
